I was going to say “runway” but I figured the internet would shout at me. I have no idea why this is / was a thing.

Do n’t say tarmac. Nobody in aviation uses that term. The area being referred to is the “Ramp” or the “Apron” These lead to “ T axiways” and service roads. They serve the “R unways”.

“ Tarmac” was the name for a product: A mix of oil/tar/petro products and gravel to create quick temporary airport surfaces during WWII. The only usage of this word seems to be be by the press who often get aviation things wrong.

Tarmac = parking lot.

Runway = On/off ramp to freeway

You chose wisely.
